Abstract: Schiff bases are used as common ligand in coordination chemistry and newlineit is widely used in medicinal chemistry. The benzoin condensation is a newlinecoupling reaction between two aldehydes that allows the preparation of newlineBenzoin(and#945;-hydroxyketones). Benzoin derivatives of Schiff bases and their newlinetransition metal complexes have been used as medicines and various newlineindustries for very long time. In the research, Schiff base ligands are being newlineprepared by benzoin with various amines such as 1, 4-diaminobutane, newline2,3-diaminopyridine, 1,3-diamino-2-propanol, thiourea, newline2-aminobenzenethiol and 2-aminophenol. Metal complexes have been newlinesynthesized by using the above Schiff base ligands with coordination of newlinecobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) salts. The structure of all the newlinesynthesized ligands and their metal complexes have been characterized newlinethrough spectral studies such as IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Mass and newlineESR and other physical methods such as elemental analysis, magnetic newlinemoments, molar conductance and thermo gravimetric (TG) analysis. The newlineantimicrobial activity studies are carried out for the Schiff base ligand and newlineits metal complexes. The metal complexes possess a higher antimicrobial newlineactivity than their free ligands. Further the corrosion study also carried out newlineby weight loss method.
