Abstract: | The study has been planned in various chapters briefly discussed and described below: The epics, Mahabharat, uphold the values of the patriarchal society, ruled over by the King. However, there are portions in these texts which reflect the ambivalence of the society as in the Mahabharata, Draupadi had the right to marry and keep five husbands. This showed that the society was partly polyandrous and matriarchal in nature.4 In the Ramayana, when Rama intended to perform the Ashwamedha Yajna he was advise to keep a golden statue of Sita beside him during the ceremony. The Yajna was considered complete only when the wife accompanied the husband. 5 In ancient India, women were held in high esteem. The society was partly matriarchal as is evident from the epics. During the medieval period, there was a degradation of status of women. The Dowry system, Sati and Pardha System down grated women. The status of women is not really promising in the modem times also even many protective laws are made for the help of women but actual and real victim of these crimes are helpless to use these protective laws, due to social and family pressure. But opposite to it, there is another class of women which misuses these protective laws for money and to satisfy their greedy needs. These women not only exploited their husband but whole family of husband is roped under criminal law. newline |
