Abstract: newline Kshara is a caustic material obtained from the ash of medicinal plants, newlineminerals, shells and other herbs either individually or in a combination of two or more newlineusing a special technique of preparation. The word Kshara is derived from the root newlineKshar, means to melt away or to perish. Acharya Sushruta defines as the material newlinewhich destroys or cleans the excessive/the morbid doshas (Ksharanat Kshananat va newlineKshara). The drug which has the characteristics of Kshanan or Ksharan literally newlinemeans that which destroys fleshy mass either healthy or unhealthy is Kshara, owing newlineof this property it is indicated in more than fifty clinical conditions. In Ayurveda newlineapprox twenty five plants were described for making the Kshara, among them newlineApamarga (Achyranthes aspera Linn.), Aaragvadha (Cassia fistula), Arka newline(Calotropis procera), Palash (Butea monosperma) and Yava (Hordeum vulgare) are newlinethe most commonly used plants due to its wider availability and utility so these five newlinewere chosen for analytical study. Apamarga (Achyranthes aspera Linn.) is a newlinecommonly used plant source for making the Kshara. It is one of the principal newlineingredient of Ksharasutra (chemical seton) which is a mode of treatment for the newlinesuccessful management of fistula in ano and other sinus diseases and also known for newlineits role in management of chronic non healing wounds. Thus Apamarga Pratisaraniya newlineKshara is used for clinical study and assessment of its mode of action.
