Abstract: | newline Lignocellulosic biomass presents a promising source of ethanol and can be utilized for synthesis newlineof ethanol. Ethanol in turn can be used as an additive for blending in regular petrol. This will newlinelead to reduced consumption of the fossil fuel. However, biomass is a recalcitrant source of newlinecarbon where sugar monomers are entrapped in crystalline cellulose or in hemicellulosic fibers. newlineIn order to make the sugar monomers available for microbial metabolism the lignocellulosic newlinebiomass is pre-treated with physicochemical means. Dilute acidic pre-treatment is frequently newlineused to obtain a higher yield of pentose sugars (mainly xylose) which is entrapped in newlinehemicellulose. However, the harsh pretreatment results in conversion of xylose and glucose to newlinefurfural and 5-hydroxymehyl furfural (5-HMF), respectively, which imparts growth inhibition to newlinethe |
