Abstract: The study was undertaken to find the effects of intelligence levels on the problem solving ability and academic achievement of higher secondary students studying in English and Hindi medium schools of the district, Dehradun. The study was conducted on 600 higher secondary students of English and Hindi medium schools of the district, Dehradun. Questionnaire on General Mental Ability test by Roma Pal and Rama Tiwari (English/ Hindi) for age group 13 to 17 years and Problem Solving Ability Test by Roop Rekha Garg (Hindi/English) for age group 12 to 19 years was taken to collect the data. It is acknowledged by all the researchers that one of the most important single variable which affects schooling is, the quality of behavior called intelligence. Different children have different I .Q. level and according to that different problem solving ability that affects their academic achievement. Thus intelligence levels have an impact on the problem solving ability and academic achievement of a person. The present research conducted between the two mediums of schools revealed that there is no significant difference in levels of intelligence of English and Hindi medium higher secondary students of the district, Dehradun. On the other hand, the difference was found in the problem solving ability and academic achievement of the higher secondary students of English and Hindi Medium schools. English medium higher secondary students are better performers than Hindi medium higher secondary students in both Problem Solving Ability (PSA) and Academic Achievement (A.A.).The results also revealed that the levels of intelligence had an influence on Problem Solving Ability (PSA) of English and Hindi Medium higher secondary students. It shows that the English medium students are good at Problem Solving Ability (PSA) due to the effect of levels of intelligence than Hindi medium higher secondary students.
