Abstract: newline Diesel engines have been widely used in heavy-duty vehicles, heavy machinery, power generation, load carriers, and tractors because of the ability for lean operation and higher fuel efficiency. The development of a nation is strongly dependent on the availability of fuels for power generation, agriculture, and transportation. For developing countries like India, the major challenge is to meet the high demand for oil. The dependency on conventional petroleum sources can be minimized by utilizing renewable sources of fuel. Consequently, clean combustion and lower exhaust emissions can be achieved. The potential alternative fuels to diesel are biodiesel produced from several types of oils such as non-edible oils, vegetable oil. To meet the large requirement of biodiesel, different source of biodiesel must be explored. newlineIn the present work, experimental analysis has been carried out on the combustion characteristics and performance parameters of the diesel engine fueled with different biodiesels operated at a constant speed and various engine load. Fifteen sets of biodiesel produced from non-edible oil, i.e., Castor biodiesel, Karanja biodiesel, and Linseed biodiesel, blended with pure diesel fuel, has been considered. The influence of volume fraction of biodiesel blends on the combustion characteristics (Cylinder pressure (CP), Mass Fraction Burned (MFB), Combustion Duration (CD), Rate of Heat Release (ROHR), Cumulative Heat Release (CHR), and Rate of Pressure Rise (ROPR)) and performance parameters (Indicated Power (IP), Mechanical Efficiency (ME), Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE), and Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC)) have been investigated. Further, the experimental investigation has been explored to determine the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine fueled with biodiesel blends by using a methodology. The empirical relations have also been developed for each performance parameter. The developed empirical relations can be exploited to compute the various performance parameters of the engine at different engine load and biodiesel blend. newlineIt is observed that blend C20D80 (20% Castor biodiesel and 80% diesel fuel) delivers combustion characteristics such as maximum peak cylinder pressure, MFB, ROPR, CHR close to pure diesel. The performance parameters (IP, and BTE) are found higher at the blend C20D80. It is also observed that the blend C20D80 gives the highest brake thermal efficiency of 28.92% among all five blends of Castor biodiesel. It is observed that blend K30D70 (30% Karanja biodiesel and 70% diesel fuel) delivers combustion characteristics such as maximum peak cylinder pressure, MFB, ROPR, CHR close to pure diesel. The performance parameters (IP, and BTE) are found higher at the blend K30D70. It is also observed that the blend K30D70 gives the highest brake newlinev newlinethermal efficiency of 29.04% among all five blends of Karanja biodiesel. In the case of Linseed biodiesel, it is noticed that L40D60 (40% Linseed biodiesel and 60% diesel fuel) delivers combustion characteristics such as maximum peak cylinder pressure, MFB, ROPR, CHR close to pure diesel. The highest maximum indicated power and BTE have found for L40D60 blend while comparing the other blends of Linseed biodiesel. The highest brake thermal efficiency, 29.27%, is found for L40D60 blend among all blends of Linseed biodiesel. newlineThe present study revealed that, for optimum engine performance the share of biodiesel in blend is different for biodiesel produced from different source. The blend C20D80 is found an optimum blend among biodiesel blends of Castor oil, and the blend K30D70 is noticed an optimum blend among biodiesel blends of Karanja oil, and in the case of the Linseed biodiesel, the blend L40D60 is found an optimum blend among all Linseed biodiesel blends. So, it is cleared that the maximum blend shares 20%, 30%, 40% of Castor, Karanja, and Linseed biodiesel respectively can be used successfully in the diesel engine without any major modification in the engine hardware. newlineKeywords: Combustion characteristics; performance parameters; diesel engine; castor biodiesel; karanja biodiesel; linseed biodiesel;
