River systems have been the birthplace of civilizations all over the world. The Ganga is the National River of India. The Ganga River is the embodiment of Indian faith and history. It is both the means and the ends of religious and cultural upliftment. River Ganga is renowned for its physical and moral sustenance with healing and regeneration abilities. It holds an enormous sacred role in the Hindu religion and is mentioned in many ancient Indian holy books such as the Vedas, the Puranas, the Ramayanas and the Mahabharata. The River Ganga is mentioned in the Rig Veda, the early Hindu scriptures. It is found mentioned in the Nadi-stuti, which lists the rivers from east to west. Ganga, proudly called the national river of today, is a symbol of religious and spiritual faith for the country. Originating in the heavens the Ganga of mythology came down to earth from the Milky Way in a lock of the god Shivaand#8223;s hair, thus becoming a sacred bridge between this world and the divine thereby opening the gateway to the next life.
