Abstract: newlineRice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for about 60% of the world population and plays a newlineprominent role in the economic and social stability of the world. It is grown in a wide range of newlineenvironments in more than 100 countries spread across six continents. Worldwide, rice is newlinecultivated on an area of approximately158 million hectares (m ha) and produced more than 700 newlinemillion tonnes (mt) rice annually (470.6 mt of milled rice) in 2015 (USDA, 2016).
