Abstract: | In the light of the knowledge that iodine uptake by the thyroid and newlineconcentrating ability of the thyroid gland in the presence of low levels of iodine newlinewith concomitant high levels of fluoride. At the cellular level the pathological newlinechanges of the thyroid gland are studied. Fluoride and iodine are both newlinehalogens. By virtue of the low atomic weight fluoride displaces iodine newlineinterfering with the iodine availability for the uptake by the thyroid gland. The newlinefluoride is a universal G-protein activator/inhibitor. The mechanism of iodine newlineuptake is affected in the presence of high fluoride that can adversely affect the newlineG-protein. The TSH output from pituitary gland is inhibited by fluoride, thus newlinereducing thyroid output from thyroid glands. Fluoride competes for the newlinereceptor sites on the thyroid gland which respond to TSH, so that this newlinehormone reaches the thyroid gland and so fewer hormone is manufactured. In the present study, it was found statistically significant relationship between water and serum fluorides. The results of the study strongly suggested assessing the magnitude of newlinethe problem of fluorosis, where drinking water, milk, fruit juices or any such newlinedrinks can be a source of high fluoride content warranting remedial measures newlineas a major public health problem prompting the public health authorities for newlinenecessary measures to combat the situation. newlineThe current study highlights deranged functions of thyroid reflected in newlineattend thyroid biochemical parameters in the presence of high fluoride content newlinein the water in their environment. It is desirable to examine the thyroid function newlineof the people attending to the outpatient department under given scenario in newlinethe light of knowledge of affliction of thyroid function by fluoride. newline |
