dc.description.abstractThe recent experiences in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami showed the efficiency of remote sensing techniques in quick damage mapping and recovery efforts. This research presents an object-based image analysis method and new remotely sensed solution for mapping and monitoring the recovery of the tsunami-affected areas. Nagapattinam province of Tamilnadu, which was strongly attacked by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, is selected as the demonstration site. IKONOS and QuickBird sets acquired on June 10, 2003 (pre-tsunami); December 29, 2004 (immediate-tsunami); October 31, 2005 (post- tsunami) are used in this research.This research presents a solution for tsunami damage assessment and monitoring of reconstruction area in Nagapattinam; analysing the tsunami-affected and reconstructed area; and detecting the tsunami damaged buildings by using remote sensing from IKONOS and QuickBird images. The primary objective of the thesis is to search and detect the land cover changes and infrastructural damages, including a number of newly developed buildings and a number of storeys and tsunami sensitivity of coastal vegetation. newline
