Abstract: | Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an emerging solid state weldingprocess used to join dissimilar or similar metals based on the requirements. Itwas first developed in the Welding Institute (UK) as a solution for welding ofhigh strength aluminium alloys with difficulty in joining under conventionaljoining process and widely used in the aircraft and aerospace industries.Hence, FSW was suggested to be used as a suitable procedure to provide forthe bonding of the required metals. Specifically, the existing conventionalmethods at that time often caused various defects in welding of aluminiumalloys and resulted in poor weld quality with high costs due to the tediousnature of welding aluminium. FSW does not require additional material tomake the joint, which is also a weight reduction factor that is deemed vital inweight sensitive industries like the aerospace industries. Another advantage ofthe solid state welding is that there is no need for specific filler material forcreating particular joints. The absence of any fusion of the metals haspractically eliminated the brittleness of the weld. newline |
