Communication technologies have experienced growth in leaps and bounds in the past two decades with the past decade experiencing an enormous production of a number of state of the art, hand held and miniature communication gadgets. The conventional wired scheme of communication has been fast replaced with state of the art and high speed wireless communication systems utilizing sophisticated network and communication protocols and standards. It could be observed from the evolution of communication networks that sophistication has increased in developing new technologies ultimately aimed towards simplifying the lifestyle of consumers. Seamless connectivity at extremely fast speeds and accessible all over the globe round the clock have become the motivating factor behind the research in communication technologies. Off late there has been a great scarcity in demand for radio spectrum attributed to the increased number of wireless devices requiring spectrum for operation. This has motivated researchers to find alternate methods of utilizing the scarcely available bandwidth to be allocated to the users on a demand and priority basis. Consistent research has led to an ideal solution in the form of Cognitive radio networks which represent a set of intelligent systems which allocate the available spectrum to users in an intelligent and efficient manner. newline
