Consequences of the phenomenal growth of urbanization and industrialisation in developing countries, especially in major cities, forced the geotechnical engineer to utilize even the unsuitable land, once discarded, for geotechnical applications such as land reclamation, embankment construction, back filling, etc. The unsuitable land, in the engineering sense, is having undesirable properties like low shear strength, high compressibility, high swelling/shrinkage and also liquefiable nature, often recognized as problematic soils. Beside this, generation of uncontrollable and non-engineered industrial wastes are also posing a great constraint to the geotechnical engineer as they not only occupy very large space but also leading to unhygienic environment. newline
