Abstract: Friction welding defines a term used for a solid condition joining process such that heat is produced through the translation of mechanical energy into thermal energy on the boundary of the components for the period of rotation subject to pressure. It is well known for its low heat input, low production time, environment friendliness, easiness of manufacture and high efficiency. Super austenitic stainless steel are specifically worthy of the note since they connect between comparatively economical austenitic stainless steel and costly nickel- based super alloys as elevated corrosion properties are obligatory reasonably elevated temperatures. The micro- structure of super austenitic stainless steel comprises an entirely austenitic structure in the solution-quenched situation. Super austenitic stainless steel is made use of widely in chemical plants, paper and pulp industries and ship hull and pollution control equipment. Friction welding exhibits an immense impact on the welding of automobile components and manufacturing industries. In order to exploit the complete advantages of super austenitic stainless steel, suitable joining techniques are used. Super austenitic stainless steel which could not produce a defect-free weld through fusion welding process can be easily integrated through this friction welding. Hot cracking, coarsening, occurrence of inter-granular corrosion and carbides in weld section even as in service are the chief drawbacks of fusion welding of super austenitic stainless steel. Friction welding eliminates such pitfalls. There is a deficiency of prints on friction welding on the super austenitic stainless steel. Detailed information on the friction welding of AISI 904L super austenitic stainless steel up till now is not entirely found. The present work emphasizes on friction welding of 904L super austenitic stainless steel. The processed joints are evaluated through mechanical and metallurgical characterizations.
