Abstract: | The knowledge of drugs has accumulated over thousands of years as a result newlineof man s inquisitive nature so that today we possess many effective means of ensuring newlinehealth care. Herbal treatments are the most popular form of the Alternative Medical newlineSystem. The plant based traditional medicine systems continue to play a crucial role newlinein the health care system. The demand of herbal based medicine, health products, newlinepharmaceuticals, food supplements, nutraceuticals and herbal cosmetics are increasing newlineworldwide. Scoparia dulcis Linn. is a herb belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae, newlinetraditionally used for various ailments inclusive of diabetes, renal calculi and so on. newlineThis plant was selected because of its potential unexplored pharmacological activity newlineand started collecting from Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu, the South end of newlineIndia because of its abundant availability. newlineThe present study was aimed to formulate, evaluate and investigate the newlineanticancer and antidiabetic action of ethanolic extract of Scoparia dulcis Linn. newline(EESD). The study was carried out in 3 steps, namely preliminary evaluation, newlinepharmacological screening and formulation development and its evaluation. newlinePreliminary evaluation part includes evaluation of microscopical characteristics of newlinefresh leaf, stem, root and seed coat of the plant, analysis of leaf constants, estimation newlineof physical constants such as ash values, moisture content and extractive values of newlinedried powder, identification and quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents in the newlineEESD and screening of phytoconstituents by TLC,UV,IR,HPTLC, HPLC,LC-MS and newlineGC-MS chromatographic spectral analytical methods, evaluation of the crude material newlinefor the presence of elements, heavy metals and other toxic substances. |
