Abstract: Diesel engines are the most extensively used as power source in the Automobile vehicles and stationary power generation systems. The main drawback of diesel engines is that it liberates huge amount of Oxides Of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions in the exhaust. NOx emission causes serious effect on the environment and human being and therefore, it has to be controlled effectively. NOx is a collective term for NO and NO2 which is an air pollutant. Combustion exhaust is the largest single contributor to NOx pollution. The existing NOx reduction techniques are consume power, costlier and complex in nature. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) are the most widely used after treatment technologies to control NOx emission but they have various disadvantages like power loss, ammonia slip and degradation of the catalyst. In this study, electrochemical decomposition of NOx is proposed for the control of NOx and simultaneous control of Hydrocarbon (HC), Carbon mono Oxide (CO) emission in diesel engine. The NOx decomposition in an electrochemical cell is achieved by passing electric current. In this work, an ionically conducting ceramic electrochemical cell is investigated for the control of diesel engine exhaust emissions. The proposed electrochemical cell consists of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as an electrolyte and Silver (Ag)-YSZ and Nickel Oxide (NiO)-YSZ as electrode material. newline
