dc.description.abstractAgeing has emerged as a major issue in both the developed and developing countries of the globe. A population is classified as ageing when elderly people become a proportionately larger share of the total population. With the rapid decline of fertility, mortality and morbidity rates, older population all over the world as well as in India is increasing at an alarming rate. Large numbers of older persons face challenges such as discrimination, isolation, social marginalization, negligence, poverty, loneliness and abuse that severely restrict their rights and contributions to society. newlineThe present study aimed to find out the challenges faced by elderly people in Lucknow District. A sample of 200 household was collected through purposive sampling method. Along with the household survey, a number of case studies were also done. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were incorporated to collect and analyse data. The findings highlighted that, the informal support system is instrumental in safeguarding the elderly people; though various policy frame as well as constitutional and legal provisions do exist in India but they are not reaching the intended beneficiaries due to lack of awareness. This study provides some insights and suggestions which is based on findings of research work which may be helpful for the policy formulation in future. newline
