The distribution of electrical power from utility to the consumer is through electrical grids leads to more amount of power losses due to the proliferation of large number of nonlinear loads in the electrical system. These nonlinear loads increase the reactive power consumption reducing the power factor. FACTS based compensating devices are utilized to improve the quality of electrical power delivered to the load. The compensation of reactive power in the distribution system can be controlled by DSTATCOM. DSTATCOM are modeled using voltage source converters designed using power electronic based switching devices. The converters are used for mitigating the effect of harmonics, to compensate the reactive power, and balancing the electrical power for nonlinear unbalanced loads at point of common coupling. For effective compensation and reduced losses the converter and control algorithm for controlling the power electronic based switching techniques should be optimal. Increased number of switching devices leads to more switching losses in the voltage source inverter. newline
