Abstract: | India has a population of 1,369 million among which 7.9 million are blind. The rural people and people in the age band of 45-65 are the major contributors. The major cause of this is glaucoma. Glaucoma is stated as the third major eye disease that causes blindness. Diabetic retinopathy, cataract are the other major disease-causing blindness. More awareness about the disease and timely identification of glaucoma would have been a good solution for reducing the number of blind people. Glaucoma is considered as the third thief of vision worldwide. Glaucoma is a silent thief because the onset of the disease is unidentified. The disease is not noticed until the vision in the edges is blurred or lost. This situation is called tunnel vision. The lost vision is irreversible. After identification, the disease can only be controlled from creating no further damage. The initial stages of the disease are redness and pain in the eye. The pressure inside the eye called the intraocular pressure is increased due to the blockage of aqueous humour. This pressure must maintain in the range 19-21mm Hg. Any increase in this pressure indicates a suspicion of glaucoma. Glaucoma affects various parts of the eye. The first among it is the increase in the intraocular pressure. The shape, color, vision are other aspects that are affected by glaucoma. newline |
