Abstract: | In India, the present scenario shows that fossil fuel consumption in transportation and industrial sector will reach twice that of present condition by the year 2030. On other side the availability of fossil fuel resource gets depleted and cost of the fuel also increases day by day. The implementation of more stringent emission norms and demand for energy sources lead researchers to focus and improve the thermal efficiency of the engine and reduce the emissions. In-cylinder emission control and after treatment methods are used to meet the current needs. Unburned Hydrocarbon (UBHC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) are the major emissions contributed by gasoline engines. In modern automotive vehicles after treatment devices are used to meet the emission norms. But in existing engines installing modern treatment devices is more expensive and also not suitable in some cases. Higher efficiency and lower emission in SI engine are achieved by In-cylinder emission control like operating spark ignition (SI) engines with higher Research Octane Number (RON) fuel and operating the engine with leaner mode (excess oxygen). Addition of oxygenated additives with gasoline is one of the recent methods to enhance the properties of gasoline and further improve the incylinder combustion in SI engine and reduce pollution. More number of experimental studies have been carried out in single cylinder gasoline engine using oxygenates methanol, ethanol and MTBE. The oxygenates N-Butanol and DIPE have good fuel properties and are not much used by researchers in their study of SI engines particularly in MPFI engine. N-Butanol has higher calorific value, favorable oxygen content, latent heat of vaporization and higher-octane number. DIPE provides higher octane number compared to gasoline and this provides an opportunity to operate the engine with high compression ratio, lower density of DIPE helps for mixing properl with gasoline, calorific value was nearer to gasoline, these properties improve the performance of an engine. In this regard the present study aims to find out the effect of adding oxygenates N-Butanol and DIPE with gasoline on fuel properties of gasoline-oxygenate mixture and effect of gasoline-oxygenates blends on the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of multi cylinder MPFI engine.
