Any motion that repeats itself after an interval of time is called newlinevibration or oscillation The vibratory system in general includes a means of newlinestoring the potential energy spring or elasticity a means or storing kinetic newlineenergy mass or inertia and a means by which energy is gradually lost newline damper Vibrations in most of the engineering applications are undesirable newlineand have to be eliminated Mass stiffness and damping are the main newlinecharacteristics of a vibratory system Out of these three the first two are the newlineinherent properties of the system The main advantage of providing damping newlinein mechanical systems is just to control the amplitude of vibration so that the newlinefailure occurring because of resonance may be avoided Particle damping is newlinean inherent part of the system Particle damping is one type of impact newlinedamping which is conceptually simple In particle damping holes are drilled newlinein the vibrating structures and these holes are filled with metal or ceramic newlineparticles of size ranges from 0 05 and#150; 5 mm in diameter When the structure newlinefilled with these particles vibrates the particles collide with each other or newlineslide over one another Energy dissipation in particle damping is a complex newlinecombination of friction collision and shear damping In this research work newlineparticle impact damping technique was applied to a boring bar and a free and#150; newlinefree beam From experiments conducted on boring bar the impact of particle newlinedamping technique on the following was studied I Damping factor of newlineboring bar ii Surface roughness of bored components and iii newlineDisplacement of boring bar during machining From the experiments newlineconducted on the free and#150; free beam the impacts of particle impact damping on newlineacceleration amplitude were studied Further in all the cases the influence of newlineparticle parameters such as particle size density mass and hardness on the newlinedamping properties of particles were studied The experiments were newlineconducted with 28 different particles newline newline newlineen_US
