Abstract: ix newlineABSTRACT newlineBrake friction composite is expected to satisfy multiple criteria which include stable friction under various working conditions, low wear rate, sufficient mechanical properties, and less noise. The combinations of ingredients in the brake friction composite are proposed to achieve these multiple criteria required. This research study analyzes the influence of various steel family fibers on the tribological, corrosive-seizure and thermo-mechanical properties of the brake friction material formulation. The tribological performance of the brake composites was studied by following SAE J661/IS 2742 standard. The corrosive seizure (Stiction) property of the brake pads was studied in accordance with ISO 6315 standard. The experimental results show that the mild steel fiber-reinforced composite is comparatively better in terms of fade and wear performance when compared to the composites with annealed steel and stainless steel fibers. The corrosion resistance of mild steel fiber reinforced friction pad is inferior to the stainless steel based composites. newlineThe crux of this research work is to evaluate and compare the effect of metal sulfides, such as Bismuth trisulfide (Bi2S3), Tin disulfide (SnS2) and antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) towards the friction and wear behaviour was compared. The experimental results show that the contribution of different metal sulfides in the friction stabilization was identified in particular range of temperature. The research work further explores the possibility of using the combination of metal sulfides in brake pad formulation towards improving their decomposition temperature, oxidation product and their working temperature range in the context of friction and wear. newlineThe combined effect of the metal sulfides was investigated by fabricating, three brake pads using the possible combination of solid lubricants.
