Abstract: Electrical energy has become backbone of world economy. Major electrical energy demand, newlinein current energy scenario, relies on conventional energy sources like fossil fuel, nuclear newlineenergy and large hydro-heads at the cost of environmental and social concerns. Oil crisis newlinefaced in late 1970 and 1980 has encouraged the exploration and exploitation of newlinealternate/renewable energy sources. Depleting conventional fossil fuel reserves and newlineenvironmental concerns; like global warming, water and soil pollution, emission of greenhouse newlineand flue gases, etc.; due to emissions involved in generation from conventional sources has newlinemade the situation more alarming. Increasing energy demand has made the circumstances newlineworse due to high cost of grid extension and large land covered by cobweb of way of supply newlinelines. This is associated with economic constraints like increasing energy cost and loss of newlinepublic interest. newlineThese problems can be overcome by decreasing dependence on conventional fuels and newlineswitching to non-conventional energy sources. Non-conventional sources have exhibited newlinecomplimentary characteristics like reduction of overall energy cost and eco-friendly nature. newlineTherefore depleting fossil fuel reserves need to be preserved by alternate economic and newlineenvironment friendly power generation sources. A lot of work has been reported so far by newlinepower system researchers towards rationalizing the use of conventional and non-conventional newlineenergy resources to meet the ever increasing energy demand. The available renewable energy newlinesources like mini/micro hydro, wind, solar, waste to power, geothermal, etc. have not yet been newlineoptimally explored and exploited. These sources can be used in grid-connected as well as in newlinestandalone mode. newline
