Abstract: India is a tropical country and the source of water is typically a gamble of monsoon. The surface sources of water like lakes, ponds and rivers are overexploited due to various reasons such as population growth, expansion of business activity, rapid urbanization, climate change, and pollution. High population density in urban areas has led to over utilization of surface water which has become pervasive and indeed has led to water scarcity. Therefore, in addition to the existing surface water resources there is a need for alternate water sources. Henceforth, the most preferred source of water is the groundwater and is the main source of water for domestic and agricultural purpose. Waste materials discarded from commercial, domestic and other sources generate large quantity of unwanted solid waste. These Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) require proper disposal. The open dumpsite disposal has been indicated as one of the major sources of pollution of subsurface water resource like groundwater. Sewage water, landfill leachate, and sludge are considered as the possible sources of groundwater pollution. In this research work, the study area is around the solid waste dumping site of Tirunelveli Municipal Corporation, Tamilnadu, India which is located at Ramaiyanpatti for studying the impact of leachate on the groundwater sources. Geo-electrical and hydro-chemical analyses of groundwater in the study area were carried out to investigate the effect of the infiltration of leachate and other sources of pollution on groundwater. Geoelectrical sounding is used for the purpose of exploration of subsurface condition of the study area. newline
