Abstract: Automation has become a major part of the day-to-day life of newlinehumankind, be it in industries, construction sector, medical newlineapplications or surveillance purpose. This research throws light newlinespecifically on the surveillance sector, targeting vehicle surveillance newlineon roads, highways as well as military zones. Automation in these newlineareas is in high demand as the number of vehicles, especially in newlineurban areas has increased exponentially. Increasing number of newlinevehicles bring out the challenge of traffic management on roads in newlineterms of vehicle speed as well as keeping a track record of specific newlinevehicles that are not allowed in specific roads such as heavy vehicles newlinenot being allowed on certain roads in certain cities. Currently, in many newlinedeveloping countries, like India, the surveillance is being done with newlinethe help of Police Patrolling, which is very inefficient for a heavily newlinepopulated country like India and thus brings the need of automation. newlineAutomation in such a case focuses on the use of sensors for various newlinestages of traffic surveillance. For instance, it includes the use of newlinesensors for detecting vehicles, counting the number of vehicles within newlinethe sensor range, detecting the speed of vehicles, detecting the newlineoccurrence of accidents etc. In recent times, the sensors that are newlinewidely in use are cameras, magnetic sensor network, capacitive pad newlinetransducers, load cells etc. newlineThis research emphasizes on the use of multiple sensors including newlineCCTV Cameras, Optical Fiber sensors, and acoustic sensors so as to newlinecreate a system of highway surveillance. With the advancement of newlineDigital Image Processing techniques various traffic parameters such newlineas flow of traffic, density of vehicles and their speed, classification of newlinethe vehicles etc can be easily monitored and analysed. Continuous monitoring and analysis of traffic parameters allows the identification newlineof various traffic scenarios viz: quality of roads, congestion, newlinereckless/over speeding vehicles or accidents.
