Abstract: Chennai, India, has an immense amount of waste dumping in the riverine belts of two main rivers, Cooum and Adayar: industrial waste, port operations and anthropogenic activity. Further several studies reported that the incomplete combustion in the open municipal dumpsite is a major source for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the developing countries. Hence sixteen priority enlisted in USEPA were quantified in surface sediment and soil samples collected from Cooum, Adayar riverine belt and Kodungaiyur dumpsite (KDS) and Perungudi dumpsite (PDS) of Chennai respectively, a densely populated metropolitan city in south India newline
