Abstract: The beginning of Indian Literature in English is outlined to be the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. By that time English education was more or less determinedly customary in the three major centres of British power in India - Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1774-1833), a social reformist from Bengal who fought for widow remarriage and voting rights for women, was the pioneer of Indian Writing in English. Roy insisted that India must be included among the world s nations and education in English was essential. Indian Women writers like Kamala Markandeya, Shashi Deshpande, Arundhati Roy, Anita Desai, Kamala Das and Shobaa De hold themselves in the woman writer s world of initial rejection, dejection, familial bonds and domesticity newlineThese women writers have given literary work in India an unmistakable edge. They are able to sensitively portray a world that has in it women as a rich substance. Human relationships are embedded in the template of family. The institution of family which administers heritage, marriage and various other relationships, play a dominant role in weaving human relationships. All traditional human relationships are impossible without the concept of family. Family ties are considered as sacred in India. newline newline
