Abstract: In data centers, the core servers currently are challenged with high data loads, and thus face bottleneck conditions in regards of bandwidth and latency considerations, and thus fiber optics can be a viable option to meet the ever-growing demands. Optical Packet Switching (OPS) has several benefits of over electronic packet switching, but there are two hurdles in the implementation of OPS, one is the lack of optical Random Access Memory (RAMs) and the other is the unavailability of Tunable Wavelength Converter (TWC). In OPS, Fiber Delay Lines (FDLs) are used for the temporary packet storage and these FDLs have limited packet storing capacity. In electronic RAMs, a large number of packets can be stored for a very long duration. Therefore, both schemes have their pros and cons. newlineIn an OPS system, an effective buffer is essential for the proper packet synchronization and for avoiding collision among the packets. In OPS system, currently best option for the buffering of contending packets are FDLs. The performance of this style of buffering technique is giving good results in small-scale laboratory demonstration of OPS, however FDLs are bulky size and its limitations not able to scale full-size networks, particularly in the case when the effective buffer is required for collision avoidance. newlineOne of the main purposes of the thesis is to make a proper optical packet switch in every aspect so that it can be helpful in modern high-speed data center network applications. The switch should have very low insertion loss and very low packet loss probability. The designed switch should be capable of handling very high speed data and must have lesser number of optical components. newlineIn this thesis a hybrid buffer based switch design is proposed and simulation as well as mathematical modeling is done to evaluate switch performance. The crosstalk analysis of the switch is also performed; finally network layer performance in terms of packet loss probability is also detailed.
