Abstract: | For the past few decades studies on sericin application to textile fabrics have been subject of absorbing interest for many research workers in the field of textile finishing. Although these studies have definitely led to a better understanding of sericin treatment and some very useful recommendations have been given, there are still many problems that have remained unsolved which have received the keen attention of research workers. After reviewing the past work on the application of sericin to polyester and cotton fabrics and various tests that were performed to characterize it and the mechanical properties of treated fabrics, it was found that there was lacuna of properties such as handle and comfort properties of them. It was found that there was complete absence of work in these areas and the aim of the present study is to fill up these gaps. Sericin application has been found to be a useful finish for imparting antibacterial effect and many research workers have confirmed this in their studies. Also, in studying the wickability of the fabrics treated with sericin, a detailed analysis has not been made. In this study, an in depth work has been done to find out the shortcomings of the model which has not been pointed out. The shortcomings of this knowledge are shown to be that, although a several studies have been conducted on the application of sericin to polyester and cotton fabrics, there have been no systematic studies on their handle and comfort and these have been virtually no attempt to explain them on the basis of the results. For this study, two sets of polyester fabrics were made, one with spun yarn and the other with filament yarn newline |
