Abstract: | The ability to speak and express thoughts and make others understand, distinguishes us human beings from other homo sapiens. Speech needs a language. A child s first utterances make the parents sublimely happy. Slowly the child starts learning a few words, mostly in the mother tongue. The child can now express wishes and demand what it wants. During the initial stages of child development, the child listens to the sounds and starts associating sounds with words, simultaneously deciphering the meanings. Thus, language is an integral part of the development of human beings. Language development is a continuous process. During ancient times the shishyas had to learn Sanskrit from their gurus. Teaching and learning languages has a very long tradition. In order to become a scholar, one always needs a language. Thus, fluency in a language is an absolute necessity to progress. In olden times languages were taught by rote method. The students had to learn the rules of grammar, punctuation. Language teaching and learning was more akin to learning rules. Languages have evolved over a period of time. In the modern world they have become more communicative, interactive and dynamic. Languages have now become participative. People are no longer just bilingual but aspire to be multilingual. Parents want to teach their children a foreign language in their early childhood. They want their children to be ahead of their peers. Science and technology can make leaping progress but they still need a medium to convey. Learning a foreign language has become a necessity and norm of the present day. With the effect of globalisation and changing political and economic scenario in the world, it has become impertinent to know a foreign language. One gets to learn about new cultures, increases opportunities for employment, one has a distinctive edge over fellow applicants while considering for employability. People in many parts of the world are fighting. |
