Portrayal of the subalterns in the selected works of Mahasweta Devi and Arundhati Roy

Abstract

The main focus of the thesis is the lower caste people, untouchables, tribals and women as subaltern groups out of many other marginalized sections of Indian society and how Mahasweta Devi and Arundhati Roy, the two well-known writer activists have represented these subaltern groups in their selected works. From the reading of the selected works of their fiction and non-fiction, it is found that newlineTheir focus is around the margin, the different ways if exploitation. There are several workswhich have been carried out on Subaltern studies with regard to women writers. Subjects like women in Mahasweta Devi s works, Socio-economic problems in Arundhati Roy s works, political issues in her essays etc. are taken into consideration for several research projects nowhere is the comparative study with resepect to fiction and non-fiction of these two writers made.
