Abstract: | The continuous systematic development of modern coordination chemistry newlinewas initiated with the discovery by the French chemist B.M. Tassaert in 1798, newlinewho observed that the ammoniacal solutions of cobalt chloride developed a newlinebrownish mahogany colour. He failed to give proper scientific reasoning. newlineHowever, orange crystals with the composition CoCl3and#8729;6NH3 were isolated of newlinewhich the correct formulation was [Co(NH3)6]Cl3. This proves that the six newlineammonia molecules are combined with the Co3+ ion and the positive charge is newlinebalanced by three Cl-. The important feature of this observation was the newlinedetection of two independently stable compounds (i.e., cobalt chloride and newlineammonia). These are combined to form a new chemical compound possessing newlineproperties entirely different from those of the basic compounds. newlineLigands are named as monodentate, bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate and newlinepolydentate on having one, two, three, four and more donor sites respectively newlinein them. Chelates are complexes in which metal ion is a bonded to more than newlineone donor atom of ligand molecule by ionic, coordinate or covalent bond newlineforming a ring structure, metal being a part of that ring. newlineChelates are highly stable and have important properties and hence are newlinestudied to a great extent. The stability of chelates depends upon the size and newlinethe number of rings formed in chelation. Generally five member Chelates newlineformed of a saturated ring are more stable than the chelates formed of an newlineunsaturated five member ring. Greater stability is attained with the formation newlineof six membered ring5. The coordination number of the metal is usually 4 or 6. newlineThe physical and chemical properties of metal chelates are influenced to a newlinelarger extent by oxidation number of metal ion and functional group in the newlinechelating agent. In spite of presence of more number of chelating agents, the newlineAbstract newlinexix newlinedonor atoms that coordinate to the metal ion are mainly nitrogen, oxygen and newlinesulphur. newlineNaturally occurring coordination complexes are very important with respect newlineto biological systems.
