Abstract: Increase in the growth of new services and applications in wireless communication created high demand towards the need for spectrum at an exponential rate. Services and applications requires wireless spectrum band for their communication. The radio spectrum resource is a limited natural resource and efficient use of this resource has to be addressed. In the current scenario, static spectrum assignment policy is followed for deploying new services. Cognitive Radio Technology (CRT) enables the user to improve the bandwidth utilization and gain better quality of services for wireless communication. There are two ways to extemporize the spectrum utilization namely resourceful spectrum sharing and opportunistic spectrum usage. The cognitive radio is combined with various learning techniques to support for an adaptive and intelligent spectrum allocation to maximize the spectrum utilization. Learning models such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Game Theory (GT) are allied with the different activities of the cognitive cycle for developing an Adaptive Cognitive Radio Network (ACRN). Multihop Cognitive Radio Network is a potential approach in networks to provide high bandwidth when properly designed with Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) technologies. In this research, network layer protocols are developed for a Multihop Cognitive Radio Networks using cross layer approach to increase the spectrum utilization, throughput with minimization of delay and overhead involved in routing. The proposed system addresses the major challenges in Multihop CRN namely Spectrum awareness, Quality route establishment and Route maintenance during link failure due to spectrum unavailability and node mobility. newline
