Abstract: | Earth is the only known human living planet in the universe and the uniqueness of the earth is the presence of liquid water As Sir C V Raman says surface is covered by water out of which only 2 5 is fresh The remaining water is saline and is not suitable for human consumption The fresh water resources are getting polluted and the demand for fresh water is increasing day by day Water reclamation could bring complete solution for this problem Various methods are being employed to distill fresh water from sea water and brackish water Among all the available desalination methods the simplest and cost effective method is desalination using solar still Solar energy is an abundantly available energy source which can be exploited for the purpose of desalination of saline water Solar stills are currently deployed in many waterscarce regions of the earth However the distillate productivity of the solar stills is comparatively low Various research works are being carried out to increase the distillate productivity of a solar still. Wind velocity solar radiation basin area of the still surface area of water depth of water and glass cover temperature are some of the factors that affect the daily productivity of a solar still newline |
