Abstract: | Environmental benefits of electric vehicles have captured worldwide attention. Decreased system costs, zero-pollution at the end user side, eliability, improved component and system newlineperformance and efficiency are the key factors causing electric-drive vehicles more attractive. Focus of research from the point of view of overall efficiency improvement of modern electric newlinevehicles has resulted in the development of high efficiency electric traction motor drives. Many electrical vehicles have been introduced commercially in the global market. The Toyota machines have been viewed for many years as the state-of the art product particularly in the newlineToyota Prius. A lot of work has been done at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) and Argonne National Lab (ANL) in this regard. There are several types of electric motors that are used in vehicle propulsion systems such as DC motors, Synchronous Motors with Permanent Magnets newline(PMSM), Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM), Induction motors (IM) etc. Performance of these newlinemachines with batteries requires careful consideration of their choice. newlineThis work presents a study of the current EV scenario in India and world over and the impacts newlinethe system components have in the real world scenario. The environmental concern put out by newlinethe internal combustion engines is quite remarkable. Many methods have been suggested in newlineliterature to rule out the possibility of environmental pollution caused by the internal combustion newlineengines. This research proposes the use of an environment friendly electric drive, that is, the newlineSRM that can be powered using Renewable Energy resources and environment friendly battery newlinestorage. This can be the major way out to reduce carbon footprints from an Indian perspective. newlineA 20kW 8/6 SRM for EV propulsion is proposed and is compared with a same rated Induction newlinemotor and Rare Earth motor. The comparative study gives insights into the use of these drives newlinefrom a technical as well as environmental perspective. The SRM drive is thought to be the best newlineof the lot |
