Abstract: | Oral cancer accounts for more than 2-4 % of all cancers worldwide. Oral newlinecancer can be preceded by some benign oral lesions with malignant potential, newlineincluding leukoplakia, erythroplakia, oral lichen planus, and oral submucous fibrosis. newlineChewing of tobacco, pan masala, and betel nut is very common among north Indian newlinepopulation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is an important outcome of newlinethis habit. Imbalance between ROS and antioxidants leads to oxidative stress. newlineInflammation playsan important role in oral cancer microenvironment. Genetic newlinepolymorphisms of cytokine-encoding genes(TNF and#945;,IL-6 and IL1-and#945;)are known to newlinepredispose to malignant disease. The aim of our study wasto find out the role of newlineoxidative stress, enzymatic, non-enzymatic antioxidant and proinflammatory cytokine newlinegene polymorphism in oral precancerous lesion and oral cancer to predict disease newlinesusceptibility. The increased malondialdehyde level and decreased antioxidant status in newlinethe individuals with oral lesions may be used as a susceptibility marker to assess the newlineseverity of the disease for both preventive and clinical intervention. The pro inflammatory cytokine coding genes responsible for immune response against cancer susceptibility could be used as markers in designing new therapeutic strategies for oral cancer treatment. However, further studies with larger sample size are required to confirm its transformation into oral cancer. newline newline |
