T h e ever increasing requirement of bandwidth for provisioning of data services such as VoIP video on demand has spurred the related research in finding ways of effective utilization and allocation of communication resources. A gradual transition in the electronic communication technologies involving physical connectivity has led to Wavelength Division Multiplexing, a promising technology that surpasses the limitation of its predecessors. In all optical WDM networks, where the network connections from source to destination are maintained in the optical domain involve routing of information and assignment of wavelength resources across the links. The routing and wavelength assignment problems entail the mathematical formulation as NP complete, Integer Linear Programming problems. In this thesis the Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem in the context of WDM networks involving wavelength converters, traffic groomers have been approached to arrive at optimal utilization of wavelengths, wavelength converters and traffic groomers using Genetic Algorithm approach. newline
