Today s electronically interconnected information society requires accurate automatic personal authentication schemes to authenticate a person s identity before giving an access to resources. The motivation behind such schemes is to guarantee that a legitimate user and nobody else access the rendered resources. Cases of such applications incorporate secure access to personal computers (PCs), laptops, PDAs, network and applications, control entry to secure areas of a building and Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) and debit transactions. Without newlineindividual recognition schemes, these systems are vulnerable to the wiles newlineof an imposter.Traditionally, human identification systems so far used are newlinepasswords, passports, ID cards, voter cards, ration cards etc. But, these newlinecan be easily forgotten, borrowed, stolen or forged. To avoid these malpractices it is necessary to create an authentication system by using biometrics. Researchers have shown promising results on employing unimodal approaches individually. However, efforts are still requiredfor achieving newlinehigher performance for their use in higher security application. These unimodal approaches rely on the evidence of a single source of information for authentication of person. However there are certain limitations to this unimodal approaches.Deformed data from sensor newlinedevices, variability, poor performance, non universality, spoofing are some of the limitations of unimodal system. These limitations can be overcome by integrating palmprint with other biometric modalities (multimodal system) or combining various classifiers (intra-modalsystem).
