In this research work the main objective is to enhance the performance combustion characteristics and reduce emissions of compression ignition engine using alternative fuel Four experimental investigations and one numerical analysis are carried out to identify the optimum biodiesel blend and modification methods Mahua oil is used in this study due to its ease of availability when compared with other non edible oils Two types of engine modifications were made The first one is low heat rejection LHR and the second one is low temperature combustion LTC with exhaust gas recirculation EGR process In the LHR modification the engine combustion chamber is coated by the alumina Al2O3 with a thickness of 350 and#956;m In the Phase I the performance combustion and emission tests were conducted with conventional diesel and various blends of mahua biodiesel in a single cylinder CI engine Based on the obtained results the B20 blend was identified as optimum Further Phase II was carried out with the LHR modified engine and comparison was made The findings showed that the performance of the coated engine with B20 blend was the best from the investigation The emission of NOx was high in the modified LHR engine owing to elevated combustion temperature These may be the minimum in Phase III of the LTC modification implemented by the recirculation of exhaust gas EGR at a ratio of 5 to 20 The NOx emission was reduced as expected but the CO and HC emissions were increased in the 15 ratio The performance characteristics increased in the 20 ratio blend newline
