Abstract: Internet of Things(IoT) is an emerging technology, and it reduces the limits between virtual and physical objects, moreover provides seamless connectivity interfaces between devices, machines, computers, and humans. The technologies like Cloud Computing, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Enterprise Architects should have IoT in their vicinity. The imparting convergence technologies of IoT are microservices, wireless technologies, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), and the internet. IoT technology is consisting of numerous objects, perhaps billions in number. The communication among these numerous things of IoT should be feasible. Furthermore, there is an emphasis on the need for robust middleware architecture to communicate with the other systems, networks, or broader internet. The present research has focused on designing smart and secures IoT gateway using Raspberry Pi. The gateway is embedded with the USB switch controller, RS485 switch controller, RTC8309 switch controller, and ADC DAC converter. The switch controllers provide the numerous ports for connecting several objects to the gateway and provision the scalability. ADCDAC converters ensure the conversion of sensor data from analog to digital or digital to the analogy concerning the application requirement. The main software components of the proposed gateway are Raspbian, centralized proxy, and security modules. Raspbian is a compatible OS for Raspberry Pi, which makes the gateway more flexible. The centralized proxy ensures a feasible way of converting the protocols concerning the specific network. An algorithm is proposed for selecting an optimized protocol suite about a specific IoT application based on the characteristics of the particular channel and the properties of the respective application. The security module provides the necessary security through software firewalls. These firewalls have been deployed using open VPN (Virtual Private Network), ufws, and Iptables newline
