Influence of ensembles worn by teachers on classroom behavior of students

Abstract

A teacher, consciously or unconsciously, imparts way more than just knowledge of a subject to the students in a classroom; influencing their cultural, behavioral and social norms. Regarding dressing sense of a teacher, there was a time when educators were particular about what they wore to the institution they worked in. They were at times even bound to adorn a professional dress code while at work. The present study explores the dress etiquettes of teachers while they are at their workplace, concerning the influence of the same on the Immediacy, Compliance, and Homophily Behavior of Students and its influence on their Self-Perception. A 47 item questionnaire and a 17 Item structured questionnaire were developed by the researcher to conduct this study. Data was collected from 360 college students and 36 teachers of four Girls Colleges of Chandigarh. Descriptive statistics, Pearson s Correlation, and Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data. It was seen that there was a significant influence of various aspects of a Teacher s Ensemble on Classroom Behaviour of Students and also on their Self Perception. The study concluded that the various aspects of Ensemble like clothing, footwear, handbag, hairstyle, jewellery and makeup influence the Classroom Behaviour of the students both individually and collectively as an ensemble. The study further revealed that teachers wearing formal ensemble (80.4%) showed a positive influence on their own self-perception, while those wearing casual ensembles showed a negative influence on this insight. newline
