Abstract: In the present study we showed that dietary fat and lipids have profound effect on the development of obesity in S.D rats and this is in concurrence with other studies on high calorie diet induced higher body fat deposition and increased body weight (Kusumoki et al.,2000,Woo et al., 2008). Previous reports showed that HCD induces oxidative stress, consequently damage of membrane lipids, proteins and other molecules (Sung et al., 20011). The well known fact is that in enzymatic reactions, SOD converts superoxide anions to Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the CAT degrades the released H2O2 to H2O (Evans et al.,2001). In our study HCD- induced elevated MDA content and a drop in the activity of SOD and CAT was observed in HCD-fed rats. But in HCD + MELMW (100,200 mg/ kg b.wt) administered rats showed fall in MDA but raise in SOD and CAT activity was noticed, suggesting the potent antioxidative property of MELMW. Elevated SOD and CAT levels in EEB treated groups effectively scavenge the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus minimized lipid peroxidation. newline
