Abstract: | Since the evolution of human speech man has expressed his thought by newlinemeans of prose. But we cannot deny the fact that poetry is older than prose. In newlinecase of Indian prose writings in English, we observe that prose writings came newlineearlier than poetry. It is equally true that Indian prose writers were not as newlinefamous as poets two hundred years ago. Indians had to learn English to use newlineEnglish language for translation, petitioning, journalism, law, social reforms, newlineeducational, historical and philosophical studies. A disciplined study of English newlinelanguage and literature in the new colleges and universities was meant for its newlinebeneficiaries. Current English education also gave birth to an all India elite; this newlinegroup above regional, linguistic, religious and caste barriers thought in terms of newlineone India. Even the best scholars of Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian languages felt newlinethat without the knowledge of English they could not reach everywhere and newlineEnglish could provide them a new dimension to their intellectual equipments. newlineIndian English Literature is the result of the cross-fertilization of two newlinefruitful cultures- Indian and English .This is the result of the endeavour of newlinemighty minds before and after independence. George Sampson knowingly newlineincludes the pioneers of Indian English literature like Toru Dutta, Manmohan newlineGhose, Tagore and Sri Aurobindo in his Concise Cambridge History of Indian newlineEnglish Literature as Anglo-Indian writers. The term Anglo-Indian was first newlineused in 1883 to describe a book entitled Indo-Anglian Literature containing newlinespecimen compositions for native students. All the writers who made newlinecontributions to English writings belonged to Indian English literature. If we newlinetalk about main qualities of Indian English literature, we may say that it newlineexpresses shades of emotions, thoughts and feelings, typical of genius and newlinecharacter of India.
