Collection Development Policy for E resources in the University Libraries of Western India

Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have changed the trends in publishing which resulted in availability of enormous electronic resources in multimedia form. Therefore, the availability and accessibility of electronic resources pose several challenges to librarians. The first challenge is to find the relevant electronic resource from the available numerous ones and then to make it accessible to the users. newlineThe present study revealed that there is no standard acquisition policy for university libraries designed by any university and any funding agency. The attempt has been made to design an E-Resources collection development policy in the university libraries of Western India. This draft will provide guidelines for, evaluation, licencing, selection and acquisition of e-resources to the university librarians. The policy includes acquisition of all types of e-resources in the university libraries. It is necessary for university libraries to acquire current and relevant information resources necessary for sustaining the teaching, learning and research activities that universities are known for newlinePolicy is a written planning document of a library for building its collection intended to define parent organization. It should be a living document flexible to change and growth. This Collection Development policy for e-resources acquisition states guidelines for university libraries in Western India for selection and acquisition of e-resources. University libraries in Western India acquire e-resources to support teaching, learning and research activities in the universities. Electronic resource is any information source that library provides access to in an electronic format.
