Use of tobacco is highly prevalent globally and India is a major consumer of tobacco products, both as in forms of smoked and non- smoked. Tobacco use is associated with a number of health impairments. The cause for majority of the oral and lung cancers is tobacco abuse. Besides, it also leads to diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study aimed at molecular aspects of tobacco was carried out on human subject aimed at the serum proteomic analysis of tobacco-users vis-à-vis non-users to identify the differentially expressed proteins and to evaluate their potential for use as diagnostic biomarkers for tobacco-related oral cancer and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Using bioinformatics tools a global network of interacting proteins has been developed that gives an insight into the role of these proteins in various physiological pathways. The demographic and anthropometric studies related to tobacco abuse was carried out along with various biochemical parameters that supplement the proteomic study. newlineAdditionally a preliminary study to use saliva as the diagnostic body fluid was also carried out. Saliva collection is non-invasive and can be used successfully to develop biomarkers. The salivary proteomic analysis was done in this regard. By combining all these data some important information have been obtained that will have implication in diagnosis and management of these diseases. newline
