dc.description.abstractIndia is on the brink of a massive waste disposal crisis Hundreds of tons of waste are being newlinegenerated in urban and rural areas in the country creating disposal problems Based on the study newlineon biodegradable waste management the objectives was framedto assess the availability of newlinebiodegradable waste to identify the methods of disposing to evolve a training curriculum to train newlinethe homemakers and to evaluate the impact of the training programme conducted The survey was newlineconducted in five villages in Thondamuthur block of Coimbatore district Fifty households in each newlinevillage which constituted a total of 250 households were selected for the study Hundred newlinehomemakers were selected as trainees for the training programme The extent of knowledge newlinegained was assessed using a knowledge check inventory comprising questions and to assess the newlineleaders attitude an attitude scale was developed based on Likerts Summated rating scale The newlinestudy revealed that a maximum of 45 per cent of the homemakers of belonged to the age group of newline40 to 50 years middle income families predominated 73 per cent Average of 3point724 kg of newlinekitchen waste 9point14 kg of general waste 397point8 kg of garden waste generated by the selected newlinehouseholds per month Differ significantly between before and after the training for knowledge the newlinecalculated tvalue 102point716 and for attitude tvalue 66point943 was found which was higher than the newlinetable value at 1 percent level of significance Hence the Hypothesis was rejected Five households newlinerepresenting each of small medium and large family which constituted a total fifteen households newlinewere selected for the case study Per day on an average the small medium and large families newlinegenerate 10point456 14point462 and 21point096 kg of biodegradable wastes respectively On an average small medium and large families produced 399 594 and 966 kg of vermicompost respectively newlinewithin a period of three months The money equivalent being Rs 3990 Rs 5940 and newlineRs 9666 generated by small medium and large families respectively On an average a largen_US
