Abstract: Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most newlinepromising high data rate transmission methodologies. The famous Worldwide newlineInteroperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), IEEE standard 802.16 solves newlinethe issue of higher bandwidth necessity. WiMAX is growing all around the world newlineas a service of broadband internet service. It is very likely that in the initial stages newlinethe WiMAX technology will be employed for nomadic and fixed applications, newlinelater on would explore the possibility of complete mobility over a period of time. newlineThe physical layer of WiMAX is derived from OFDM. Since the operation of newlinephysical layer of WiMAX is made to function in the digital domain, Many newlinetechniques were proposed to initiate its hardware implementation, but none of newlinethem turned out to be novel framework as the constraints of the adopted technique newlineexisted in Radio Frequency (RF) areas. newlineThe research work is aimed at FPGA implementation of improved OFDM for the newlinetransmission of data/image in fixed WiMAX system. The approaches include newlineDigital Up Converter (DUC)/Digital Down Converter (DDC) based OFDM, newlineinterpolated Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter channel estimation based newlineOFDM and WiMAX physical layer OFDM. Each of these are designed using newlineverilog as HDL language, synthesized on a Xilinx ISE 14.7 and simulated on a newlineModelSim SE 6.5 tool and performance is evaluated on a target specific FPGA newlinedevices. newlineIn the first part of the research work, the need and importance of data and image newlinetransmission on OFDM is analyzed. An intensive research review on image newlinetransmission is carried out. The research gap indicated that very little newlineinvestigational research on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based newlinedata/image transmission. Hence the research objectives are addressed to FPGA newlineimplementation of data/image transmission using OFDM. newlineThe second part of the research work is DUC/DDC based OFDM design for newlinedata/image transmission and its FPGA implementation. The core of the work newline newlineix newline newlineinvolved in novel implementation of DUC/DDC. A detailed analysis of FPGA newlineimplementation of OFDM individually and DUC/DDC as well as integrated is newlinepresented. The results indicated improvement in design parameter such as area newlineand power. newlineIn third part of the research work, OFDM with interpolated FIR filter channel newlineestimation for fixed WiMAX system is designed. The designs of OFDM modules newlinealong with interpolated Finite Impulse Response filter channel estimation is newlinesimulated on Matlab/simulink tool and performance is evaluated for data and newlineimage transmission. newlineThe fourth part of the research work is to address the physical layer OFDM for newlinefixed standard WiMAX system and its implementation on FPGA for an improved newlinethroughput and design parameters such as area and power. newlineHence to summarize, improved OFDM with novel DUC/DDC, interpolated FIR newlinefilter channel estimation based OFDM and WiMAX physical layer based OFDM newlineimplementation on FPGA will yield an improvement in design parameters such as newlinearea and power. newline
