Credit plays a newlinecrucial role in the modernisation of agriculture, but its role in the fight against newlinerural poverty has seldom been recognised. Financial institutions in newlinedeveloping countries whether it is public or private have sherned rural areas newlinefor various reasons such as opportunity costs and low financial credibility. newlineSwarna Jayathi Grama Swarozgar Yojana involving the Self Help newlineGroups concept was launched to provide self employment and economic newlineempowerment to the rural poor on the initiation of ministry of Rural newline2 newlineDevelopment national conference held in June 2001. The SHGs not only newlineprovide the members with an opportunity to carry out economic activities but newlinealso discuss and analyse their social and economic situation to arrive at the newlineroot cause of their problems and strive to find and implement solutions.
