A women upon being told that her child is healthy and beautiful looks away newlinesullenly. The nurse explains, Itand#8223;s a girl, thatand#8223;s why. (The Hindu, Sunday, Jul 25, newline2004) newline newlineIn another part of the country, a woman sits worriedly in the gynecology ward newlineof a hospital. She is seven months pregnant. An ultrasound scan has told her itand#8223;s a boy newlineand she doesnand#8223;t want to lose her baby . About her earlier two pregnancies she says, newline Donon time test mein ladki nikli to safai kara di . (Gurung, 2000) newline newlineThe question that arises here is why do we actually following these traditions newlineof looking down upon the carrier of a female child? Often a thought appears and newlineperturbs, did the human race have some god or other such highly worshipped or newlinetrusted figure appearing in front of them and announcing, that if girls are allowed to newlinelive it will end the world soon, or cause indefinable miseries. If it happened, then newlinewhy didnand#8223;t the same day the entire female entity was not denied the right to newlineexistence, and if this did not happen than who gave the human race the right to even newlinethink of such a step against own flesh. Forget about humanity, how can a man be newlineexpected to be loyal to any of his relations, if his loyalty died before viewing the newlinesunlight
