Abstract: | Microfinance in India acts as a solution to eradicate poverty and bring economic equality. The self-help group model is an empathetic tool to support the rural poor especially women. There are various self help group models which act as an effective mechanism to empower women and provide gender equality. Thus the self help group is said to play a dominant role to enrich the poor and establish women into women entrepreneurs. The study is focused on self help groups in Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. The aim of the study is to understand on the sustainability of the self help groups in terms of its basic functioning, activities, relation of savings and borrowings, perception of loan disbursement and retrieval and finally the problems and prospects of self help groups. The research design adopted for the research is descriptive and primary data collection method is used. A pilot study was conducted to validate the data. The sampling method adopted for the research is Multistage Stratified Sampling. The statistical tool used for study are simple percentage analysis, Factor Analysis, and Analysis of variance are used to highlight the analysis on microfinance perception, problems and prospects of self help groups. The findings of the research states that the self help group members are benefitted on joining the group in terms of raising the family income through small business. The self help group members state that there is difficulty in repaying the loans due to slow down in the business and family problems which leads to non repayment or delay in repayment of loans The empirical analysis on problems of self help groups are due to male domination, lack of motivation from the family and also non cooperation between the peer members and also lack of technical knowledge.
